Makar Sankranti & Pongal
The auspicious solar festival marking the transition of the Sun into Capricorn (Makara) and the onset of Uttarayan.
Makar Sankranti & Pongal
Mythological Story
Makar Sankranti marks the astronomical moment when the Sun God (Surya) enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara Rashi) and begins his northward celestial journey (Uttarayan). According to mythology, on this day Surya visits the house of his son Shani (Saturn), symbolizing the harmony and resolution of father-son relations despite their astrological differences.
Spiritual Significance
Uttarayan is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices and liberation. Performing charity (Daan), taking holy dips in sacred rivers, and worshipping Surya on this day bestows health, long life, and spiritual merit.
Puja Vidhi & Celebration
Devotees take holy dips in the Ganges, Yamuna, or Godavari, offer water to Surya Dev (Arghya), eat sesame-jaggery sweets (Til-Gud), and fly colorful kites in the open skies.
